This story takes place in the State of Mississippi during the 1930s. Many of the cotton pickers have a third-grade education and, because of the depression, have little chance of escaping their hard life. The lynching of a young black man is nothing more than entertainment and a distraction in their dull existence. Prejudice is a way of life. J.D. is a born mechanic whose goal is to leave the boredom of the cotton fields and go north in order to better himself. He, and other characters, give us a peek into small-town America and its intrigue. If J.D. achieves his goal, it’s because of his innate self-confidence. Hate, love and humor adds the salt to the stew. J.D.’s conversion comes slowly as he realizes prejudice comes from hate and an uncompromising mind.Griffiths, Michael is the author of 'Conversion ', published 2007 under ISBN 9781424160785 and ISBN 1424160782.
