It all begins in Northern California where a spirited two-horse race takes place during a violent rainstorm. After the unexpected demise of her parents, Raynee takes the money her mother had secretly saved for her and heads for Oregon. There, she buys a property from Duke Wagner, owner of Whiskey Hill Ranch. At the time, Raynee is restless and vaguely aware of a longing to accomplish something for her mother.
