Legends of the apostles' activities after the Resurrection of Jesus, especially graphic accounts of their trials and executions, became widely known in mediaeval Europe. Ireland played a distinctive role in the dissemination and deployment of these apostolic apocrypha. The recasting of apostolic legend took place (from the seventh century to the twelfth) both in Ireland and at Irish ecclesiastical foundations overseas in a wide variety of milieux and in genres including hagiography, liturgy, devotional commentaries, and descriptions of the apostlesAe appearances. In this first in-depth study of the collected apocryphal acts, Dr O'Leary, investigates the origins and authorship of the original Latin collection, as well as its contents and manuscript-transmission in the Latin West. Also discussed in detail is the translation of passion-stories into the Irish language. A.M. O'Leary is Assistant Professor of History and a Fellow of the Keough Institute for Irish Studies, University of Notre Dame, Indiana.O'Leary, A. M. is the author of 'Trials and Translations The Latin Origins of the Irish Apocryphal Acts of the Apostles' with ISBN 9782503513805 and ISBN 2503513808.
