The Concise Garland Encyclopedia of World Music is a two-volume set introducing the "world of music" to students, professors, and interested individuals. Derived from our Dartmouth Medal winning Garland Encyclopedia of World Music, it is designed to be easily understood by readers with a more general background (rather than an advanced knowledge of ethnomusicology. It will also offer additional features'including sidebars, and glossary terms'in an attractively designed format, for ease of use. The Concise Garland Encyclopedia of World Music will be divided into nine sections that correspond to the geographic regions of the original edition's individual volumes. Within each section, there will be entries on the major countries or geographic regions, such as Brazil or Canada for major countries or Appalachia for regions with distinct musical traditions. Each country entry will contain sidebars that define a country's prominent musical instruments and often be accompanied by a photograph of the instrument, as well as noted performers. Terms will be defined in the margin as they appear in the text; additionally, a comprehensive glossary providing basic definitions for musical terms (meter, pitch, mode) and instruments (cymbals, gong, harp) will appear at the back of each volume. These terms will be complemented with brief examples drawn from the musics covered in the particular volume they appear. Each volume will also include a CD of musical examples.Puchowski, Douglas is the author of 'Concise Garland Encyclopedia World Mus' with ISBN 9780415972932 and ISBN 0415972930.
