Fighting Flying Boat A History of the Martin Pbm Mariner

Richard A. Hoffman, a retired captain in the U.S. Navy, graduated from the Naval Academy, class of 1948. He holds a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School and a master's degree in seaplane hydrodynamics from the Stevens Institute of Technology. He is a former pilot of Martin PBM Mariners as well as other flying boats and amphibians. As a member of Patrol Squadron 892/50, he flew PBMs during the Korean War. As a test pilot he worked on the P-3 Orion trials and later commanded an operational P-3 squadron After retirement from the Navy in 1974, Captain Hoffman worked for Martin Marietta Aerospace, Lockheed Aircraft, and McDonnell Douglas Astronautics. He has published articles in Proceedings, Approach, and other aviation journals and magazines.
