SUMMARY

Helpshops achieve quality and efficiency in manual deburring. This book begins with an overview of hand-deburring technology, explains why it is the right answer for many situations, then dwells on related issues that are often ignored-knowing the edge standards needed and calculating the real cost of deburring. If you have never calculated it, you do not understand the real cost to your operation, and the potential savings that are available with the right knowledge remain unknown.Twenty chapters provide a wide perspective on the tens of thousands of tools used for deburring. The author's experience has come from precision, very close tolerance deburring, but he also has experience with commercial companies having less exacting requirements. A chapter on simple, low-cost mechanization also is presented.Ergonomics is covered in most chapters, but Chapter 31 is specifically targeted toward preventing this subtle yet serious drain on profits and workers' health. Pain is hard to measure, but its effects on our lives can be documented. Why should workers have to suffer when prevention is available?Chapter 32 (Getting More from Your Operation) could be 300 pages in length, but that is a bit impractical. This chapter may be the most helpful in the book, but it would not be as useful without all the detail provided in previous chapters. The chapter on training (Chapter 33) is unique. Training workers on how to deburr parts simply is not described in literature. Commercial courses do not exist. In this chapter, you will read about how one company prepared some 700 workers, 100 of them to perform microscope-quality deburring. The missing detail of how to inspect for burrs is covered in great detail in Chapter 34, but it should not be a chapter for inspectors-it is for those doing the deburring. If deburring operators inspect their own work well, inspectors are not needed.LaRoux K. Gillespie is the author of 'Hand Deburring: Increasing Shop Productivity', published 2003 under ISBN 9780872636422 and ISBN 0872636429.
