In nine thoroughly documented chapters, Jackson treats of all of the leading Black women writers since the end of the Second World War. He begins with a comprehensive survey of Black women writers at work today followed by a careful recitation of the multiple images of Black men portrayed in these women's writings. Then he takes on each writer in turn, beginning with Lorraine Hansberry and Marita Golden and their portrait of the African Male-Black American Female relationships and then a close look at the men of Brewster's Place in Gloria Naylor's book. Toni Morrison's male portrayals are carefully recited and considered and then Terry McMillan's Disappearing Acts undergoes an exegesis. Michelle Wallace is evaluated for her thematic treatment of Black men followed by a suggestion that a possible dialogue may occur thanks to the work of Ishmael Reed and some Black women writers. Finally, there is a stimulating and disturbing address to the issue of Klu Klux Klan Feminism, as Jackson calls it, and its possible impact upon Black male culture in America today.Jackson, Edward M. is the author of 'Images of Black Men in Black Women Writers 1950-1990' with ISBN 9781556052217 and ISBN 1556052219.
