Large-scale Disasters Lessons Learned

Incidents such as the September 11 terrorist attacks, the Chernobyl nuclear accident and earthquakes in Japan and Turkey are recent examples of the massive effects of large-scale disasters on human lives, as well as in economic terms. This publication analyses the economic and social impacts of large-scale disasters, and identifies some initial lessons for the monitoring and management of future disasters. It focuses primarily on restoring trust and securing recovery after a major event has occurred, and is based on a report prepared by a multidisciplinary OECD team of experts between May to July 2003.
