Medicare Financial Management Significant Progress Made to Enhance Financial Accountability

Medicare provided health care coverage to 40 million people at a cost of about $240 billion in FY 2001. In 1990 the program was designated as high riskÓ for fraud & abuse because of its vast size, complex structure, & program mgmt. weaknesses. In 2000 two reports were issued that made 8 recommendations for the Cntrs. for Medicare & Medicaid Serv.' to improve its performance in overseeing Medicare contractors' financial operations & providing guidance to contractors in carrying out Medicare financial activities, & to establish better financial control over the Medicare program, such as improving its accounting procedures & improper payment measurement projects. This report assesses progress in addressing these recommendations.
