One Foot in Front of the Other is a novel wherein childhood sweethearts Janine Grisham and David Bey Forest marry right out of high school. He joins the Marines; she awaits his return. During her wait, she raises their two sons and continues her own growth experience. He, having no father figure, chooses the religion of the strongest man he's seen: Malcolm X. Janine follows his decision unquestioningly. He wants to start a business; however, Janine wants him to become a part of one of the companies that have recently opened their doors to minorities. Rather than work on the marriage that is faltering, Dave decides that having another wife would assuage his wounded ego. Dave and wife number two, Samira, leave for Savannah, Georgia, and the beginning of a materially successful life. He becomes ill because of the Agent Orange poisoning and dies. He writes explicit instruction for his funeral which goes outside of the tenets of Islam and orders Samira to return his body to New Jersey. It is when these two women are forced together that the story really begins.Grady, Patricia is the author of 'One Foot in Front of the Other', published 2004 under ISBN 9781413701142 and ISBN 1413701140.
