William Keith Ickes was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, February 4, 1926. He is a veteran of World War Two, having served in The US Air Force. He earned both a bachelor's and a master's degree in audiology at the University of Utah in 1948 and 1949 respectively. He was awarded a Ph.D at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1962, also in audiology. His minor studies have been in psychology. He has been an audiologist for the Detroit Hearing Center and the Michigan Association For Better Hearing. He has also served as the Executive Director of the Des Moines Hearing and Speech Center. His primary employment has been as a Professor of Audiology at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. Elective offices include being the President of the Iowa Speech and Hearing Association, Vice President of the Texas Speech and Hearing Association, and President of the Texas Rehabilitation Association. Now retired, he enjoys the title of Professor Emeritus. His lifelong companion is Shirley Hallman, whom he married in Salt Lake City in August 1946. They have four children.
